Hi, my name’s Steve Watson and I’m a Director of TKA Solutions. I started working in the aircraft industry more years ago than I care to remember as a Mechanical Design Engineer. I have worked for Companies such as Rolls Royce, GKN and Allied Signal and by hard work and a small amount of ability ended up as a Chief Engineer at Honeywell. All well and good but I had always wanted to run my own business. So in 2000 I left Honeywell and bought a scaffolding company which I successfully ran for over 10 years. Why a Scaffolding company?… it’s a good question and one I asked myself more than once over the years.
Safety is paramount
Why is any of this relevant? If you work in the aircraft industry you are immersed in a culture where safety is paramount. Everything you do, all the systems, procedures and working practices are constantly reviewed and perfected with one aim, to design and deliver equipment that is not going to fail and jeopardise people’s lives. With this mindset I moved into the world of scaffolding. It was certainly a clash of cultures and getting scaffolders into my way of thinking was a challenge. But it gave me a unique insight into the way scaffolders want to work, all the shortcuts and little cheats they try to get away with if no one is looking when carrying out building maintenance.
By combining my knowledge of the aircraft industry and running a scaffolding company you get the benefit of systemised and documented procedures to control the project and of having someone who knows what to look out for when selecting and supervising scaffolding companies so you get total compliance.
